Hey Pam,
Seems to me, what has really dictated his pace, is the comparative lateness of his start... If his intention ever was to make it to Florida, the Keys, or the Bahamas, well... If you don't depart Maine until October, there's really only one way to do it, and that's to keep moving, at least to a considerable extent...
Number One Rule I've always had about travel, whether by land or on the water, an early departure is key... It simply gives you so many more options, whether over the course of a single day, or a trip south along the Eastern seaboard. Moving on something as slow as boats like ours, it's virtually impossible to "make up time", especially when getting into the time of the year when the days are shortest, etc... I think if Roger had managed to get started a month sooner, and been in the Chesapeake with most snowbirds by boat show time, his trip might have turned out quite differently... NTTAWTT with what he has done, of course...
Seems to me he's coming to grips with the downside of singlehanding, as well - admitting in a recent post I read he'd probably not make the trip again, alone... that does "lengthen" it considerably for many people, I suppose...
btw, I agree with Paul - I'd like to see more blog entries from you, as well... (grin)
best regards,
Jon
