If neatly dropped upside down, then you'd only have a sheet of paint to get in the way. We usually roll ours up on the foredeck, a perhaps messy project for a wet, bottom-painted surface.
Larry, I often haul the Achilles on and off the boat using the main halyard and other lines as needed. Works fairly well and someday I'll have it down to a system. Would certainly rub the bottom (paint) across the lifelines the entire way up and down.
Max, we do this only when sailing to Maine and back. Once in Maine, it goes in the water when needed and then stays there until the return trip.
