Going through somewhat the same thing paint my topsides. First coat of primer (Topcoat) didn't come out well - sanded it down and applied a second coat. After sanding, applied a color coat using almost a pint of Brightsides. Sanding off the gloss in this took me down into the primer. Hmmm - going to need some more paint. Off to Benjamin Moore to get some cheap stuff for a 'build' coat. Match the spot on my shoe, I say. Single part urethane gloss - same price as the Brightsides, except I got a gallon! That's what you see going on in the photo. I'm still learning, but I've got a gallon to learn with!
