We didn't hear about it, hear it or see it. That was right in the middle of the Navy concert. We were sitting on the deck facing the carrier's island and a bit too close to a speaker. The guy running the sound board didn't spare the watts, even when the brass instruments could have held their own just fine without any amplification. The plane crashed about a mile away by my reckoning. Glad the pilots made it out okay. I doubt the plane will be good for much after the experience.

I've been looking for a copy of the "Midway" movie. No luck so far.
