You are secured fore and aft, so no one moves.

It's like parking cars in a garage, everybody just stays lined up.

The flip side is that an errant wind can cause havoc, not be cause the boats spin, but because they don't.

Often in the fall there is a wind called a Santa Anna wind that comes from the east and with the short fetch from the mainland, the wind can build up short steep waves that can just pound Avalon Bay, which is open to the east. Not a good thing. Fortunately severe wind conditions that make these waves don't happen all that often. But there is history.
