The only thing I can think of is that you were looking at the 1/4 in NPT

size when you bought the fitting and not the actual hose size portion of the fitting. You could have bought a 1/4 inch NPT (national thread size)threaded end and a 5/16th or 3/8 barbed end.

- Something has to be wrong
  - Absolutely sure they are both 1/4"
    - If it is a diesel line, have you put some diesel in the hose?

- No winners, but this project is done.
  - A pot of "boiling" water dip the end for a few seconds..and then install.always works for me.
