It helps to enjoy traveling with the writer if it's a cruising/sailing memoir. I don't like to be told the right way or wrong way of sailing(that's what turns me off), I just like to hear what it's like from different people, the people around them and their daily travels along a coast.
Bob wasn't pretentious in person, he just seemed happy to be there with his wife. We only exchanged hellos and a few words as we rowed by and hovered for a few minutes.
Funny how that goes for many of us sailing for a few days, a couple weeks,... We're not in a big hurry to get to know other people out there much of the time. It could have something to do with our boats and the enjoyment we get from being on the water. It's not like cruising, some of us are escaping for a little while.
We also have a dog problem(ours can be a problem).
Meet people on land though, and I love to hear them tell me what they're about and where they've been or are going.
