I don't know about the Maxwell, but a simple drop-in replacement works best for me. Doing fiberglass work isn't my idea of enjoyable work.

I have a Lewmar Concept/Ocean 1 and when it was discontinued Defender blew them out for $400 each. I picked one up as a spare -- figured any repair would cost that much or more. If I never use it, it will be easy to recover that investment down the road "new in box" on eBay or to the next owner.
