Some updates
In Response To: Educating the ignorant ()

Raymarine has had so many products over the years.

The E80 appears to have a software update in 2012. http://www.raymarine.se/knowledgebase/index.cfm?view=3753. You might check if you have that. If so, from the info on that Lonk, it might be helpful.

As for the RL72. It looks there're was an RL72 and an RL72C. I don't know if there are function differences. On on post I saw, there was a reference to MARPA. That's a neat option. On my Furuno units over the years, it requires a special compass which measures not only heading, but rate of turn (I.e., angular accelleration). With that feature, you can have closest point of a approach, closest time of approach, and other items displayed for you.

The RL72 appears to me to utilize the Navionics 32mb chart cards. We have them on our Northstar units. Those cover a wide area with good detail. They are vector charts. For our use on the Eastcoast of the US, I have found them very good. Caution, where you have shifting channels, or changes in buoys,....

The use of those (or any) charts in the Carribean has been the subject of a lot of published and posted discussion. When it comes to relying on GPS positions on charts alone, batting .970 isn't too satisfying to many.
