I wouldn't add too much complexity in instruments(I have two in college so I feel your budget). I know those that live aboard long term cruising rely on SSB but it wouldn't be something I'd add for an extended east coast/Carribbean cruise.

I'd invest in upgrades of anything that makes your boat the great coastal cruiser you use today. That money will return during your current use and when you retire and extend your cruising.
