Maine Sail has an informative article about rebuilding a water pump. In it he describes smoothing the mating surfaces of the pump and cover using honing oil and wet sandpaper laid out on a flat surface. I did this a few weeks ago, only took a few minutes, and gives the surface a very smooth feel.

I also recently bought a Speedseal including the 'extended life' inner rotor, will be interesting to see how it works this summer.
