I have a 1986 Yanmar 44HP ...
In Response To: Ho often to change engine oil? ()

... with 4300 hours. Runs great. I change the oil, religiously, every 100 hours or every year, whichever comes first. I always change the oil right before lay-up. I've heard some say you must change it before starting out in the new season even if you changed it right before lay-up, because the acids have dropped down and sitting there, although I don't do that. Whenever I change the oil, I change the filter, why not ? I do have an oil changing system on the boat, it takes me less than a half hour from start to end, including clean-up and disposal. I always check the oil before starting the engine, I keep it topped off, although that means adding a tiny bit of oil once during that 100 hours. I do notice my (old) oil is relatively clean when I change it ... Some say my schedule is too frequent, but for the $30 or so for new oil, filter & a couple diapers, that doesn't bother me. What does bother me is how hard it is to find places that will recycle oil ... very rare in the Islands, we generally will wind up storing & carting the used oil back home, and surprisingly difficult in Florida. Cheers, John
