On my 4 cyl Toyota Tacoma pickup, which I beat the snot out of, I changed the oil once every 20k miles (regular oil, not synthentics). When I sold the truck at 255k miles, she was running very well and none the worse for not sticking to an oil change every 3k miles.
A diesel is a tough beast and I have to think much more tolerant of abuse than my puny 4 cylinder engine in my truck. I think once a season should do it for a boat in a saltwater environment.
