It used to be said that on a summer weekend you could walk across the harbor without getting your feet wet.

Hadley Harbor, this is, although I've heard it used to describe other places, such as the Sand Hole on LIS. Last Sunday morning, the fifth, there were three sailboats and one powerboat at anchor. (We'd picked up a private mooring, so were out of the count.) Where has everyone gone? Even the Coast Guard moorings are gone.

We sailed down on a honking SW Friday afternoon and rafted up with friends. The SW didn't fade and Saturday it felt little like we were enduring a heat wave. We dinghied over to the bridge to Vineyard Sound and made futile attempts to swim through against the current. Fun to ride with it, though! Sunday morning the wind died and suddenly it did feel hot. It returned enough to let us sail back to Onset in time for a thunderous downpour for the last mile or two across Hog Island Channel and into the harbor to the mooring. Nice to be on the water again.
