waiting for weather window to Ireland or maybe Norway...
In Response To: Great stuff... ()

Hi Jon,

Greetings from Drake and Mo aboard Paragon at the yacht club in chilly Reykjavik waiting for a weather window.

Autumn is upon us, and the weather windows are getting fewer and shorter. Yes, the weather is absolutely dictating where we can or can' t go. Last night I realized that if we can't find a safe window to sail to Ireland then we'll have no choice but to find other options.

I'm not sure if we'd be allowed to stay in Iceland because it's a part of the Schengen Agreement. US citizens officially can stay no more than 3 months in all Schengen countries combined during any 6 month period.

Ireland and Norway are also in the Schengen Agreement (we were considering sailing to Norway because we've heard great things about the winter weather there.)

Our plan has been to get to Ireland, see if we'd be allowed to stay through the Winter, and if not then to sail to Plymouth, England where we could stay for 6 months.

We wanted to avoid sailing with Autumn gales by sailing straight to Ireland from Greenland, but the weather windows were looking horrible and it was less than half the distance to sail to Iceland.

As of this morning it looks like on Friday we might have decent weather for sailing 130 nm to the Vestamayan Islands off the south of Iceland to wait for a window to Ireland. Then maybe an acceptable window might be opening up a few days after that. Right now so much is up in the air depending on the weather...

Happy sailing,

Drake
