I am going to buy a new full batten mail sail and the sail maker has suggested one of the following options for dowsing the sail:
1) (Highly recommended) - use a Dutchman system. He strongly suggests that you attach/detach in spring & fall by detaching from the topping lift by pulling a pin at the top of the mast (hoist someone up on a bosun chair). He has seen some people detatch at the boom but does not recommend.
2) Use a Harken Lazy jack system
3) Don't use anything to guide your sail down (just like I currently do with my non-full batten sail and simply flake it on the boom yourself)
Questions: Does anyone have a Dutchman and how do you attach/detach when removing? The system does sound great however I typically rig the sails myself so this would be a major issue. How do you like the Dutchman? Is there a neat way to be able to drop the topping lift down by changing the permenat tie at the masthead? Do I really need a Dutchman or lazy jacks? with full battens, will it be a lot harder than my current sail with has partial battens?
