Knot on shackel... 
In Response To: I think he is talking knot to the shackle vice splice ()
Most halyard knots would be difficult or impossible to untie after being loaded.
Cut it off when you need, and you only lose a few inches of the line vs. much longer if you have to cut off a splice.
