Nav SW....

Gene,

I recently picked up an Asus Viverotab Smart, Windows 8 tablet. I have NOT upgraded it to 8.1 yet.

I loaded up OpenCPN, then downloaded a batch of charts from NOAA. It came up and worked first time. I have a small ($25.00) GPS puck that I used with my original Eee PC. That fit well on the tablet and is working just fine.

The Viveotab has a built in GPS, BUT openCPN could not see it at first. In searching the net, I found a small patch program called GeolocationTCP. I have installed it and run it. The description said; "Simple TCP server which interfaces the Windows 8 Location API and serves NMEA sentences. Intended for use with OpenCPN...." It seemes to be working OK, but I have not used it on the water .... YET.

I am hoping that some of the people doing OpenCPN will include a patch to the GPS in Windows tablets.

I am using it as backup nav ONLY, I have not run Winlink to my Icom 706 on it yet.
