These high tech boats ar relatively fragile
In Response To: Perspective.. ()
and his "reduced canvas" was probably still a very large area relative to most cruising boats of same size.
Also, his super deep keel that is so effective going to windward could have been a problem when off the wind, since the boat could trip over it (although he gave no indication that this happened in the material I have read)

- I'm no fan of overbuilding, but a hull that breaks in half sounds underbuilt to me.
