I would think designing bigger ships to endure storms is much more daunting.

The stresses of heavy cargos and long LOA's is a project to design and build. But they do it regularly and these boats work in those conditions 24/7, some for decades.

I don't want to take anything away from these racing sailors but to design a 60' sailboat hull to remain in one piece is a piece of cake in comparison.
I think we should except these boats have speed priorities that can compromise their hull strength.
