Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

Not yet. I heard a story several years ago in the Bahamas ...

an elderly couple, maybe 70's, were cruising, they brought along the wife's sister to help, because the wife was in dementia, the elderly sister knew absolutely nothing about boats or sailing, and the sister/wife with dementia was worse off. Early one morning while the gals were still sleeping, the husband took a leak off the stern and fell in. Gals woke up several hours later to discover the husband was no longer aboard. As both gals were basically useless, it took a few more hours to figure out what was happening, and then how to use radios, SSB, not to mention get the boat under control, and so on. To make a long story short, eventually they were able to get BASRA from Nassau, with a spotter, who found the gent sometime just before dark that evening still floating in the water. Miracle if you ask me. In the end, all were fine, including the boat. True story.

Here's another … true story … Husband & wife traveling across Idaho one summer in their RV. It's very early morning, she's still sleeping in back and he pulls over to a Rest Area to take a leak. While he's in the bathroom, she wakes up, decides she also needs to pee, walks into the ladies room. When she comes back out, he and the RV are long gone down the highway, husband has no idea his wife woke up and left the RV. Four hours later, he gets pulled over by the Highway Patrol and learns he has no passenger. Turns around to get his wife, pee stop takes all day.

Cheers, John
