And the heat pumps new efficiency puts them below wood pellets in cost. Geothermal is king, even less than cord wood, but still very expensive to install. They're suited to smaller efficient spaces need less btu's/hr, as opposed to large ones better suited for central heat.
There are rebates but as I'll install my own, I don't get them.
The heat pump water heaters work on the same principal as the mini split systems. They have some drawbacks on installation(cool the air, need drainage and filter cleaning). But Maine is giving 350 rebates against the cost of 1k. They'll operate for less than half the cost of conventional electric water heaters.
My goal is to keep minimizing usage and move toward electric with wood pellet stove in the core of our house. We use a few dozen gallons of K1 in a space heater in an apartment/seasonally and one in my shop.
Eventually, I'd like to put PV panels on a south facing 40x20' roof out back to send power back into the grid to offset more of the fossil generated electricity I use.
