with some 1/8 line which I tied via "Marlin spike seamanship" type knots. I did the same down at the hook end. Then I varnished the thing with several coats. I have to add that I do keep it hanging on the overhead in my pilothouse. It's been that way for ten years or more and looks as good as new, almost. The line takes the hits so it doesn't ding up the wood. A touch up with a bit of varnish which you can't see on the line and you're off and running. It took a little time but it's a good winter project.
