Used to sail with a guy that made his own stuff. I remember a pair of cabin top winches he made - bronze, bottom handles fixed in place. Made the patterns, did the castings, then the machining. Nice to have access to a foundry and machine shop.. His 37' yawl was originally a 30' sloop - he swore there was still some of the original deadwood down there somewhere. We sailed out of Newark Bay back when they were building Port Elizabeth. Spent the Summer dodging the tugs and barges hauling the sand out of the bay - mid 60's. Kept his boat at a YC on the E side of Newark Bay. One summer he went for a 2 week cruise and I asked him where he went - got as far as Sandy Hook he told me. Saw him again years later in Block - I was anchored in my boat and noticed a yawl coming in with T37 on the main - it was him. I think Block was the furthest E he got! Good old Gus - quite the guy.
