I actually just meant remove the facing below

Leave the bunk filler, remove the facing below it, and put a removable cross bar / step across the width of the space where the facing was. It would look a little more open, and you could always use the space for a laundry basket or a sail or something. Nice to see you've gotten a lot of suggestions.
