Wow, I can't really think of a scenerio that would cause that...

Is it a GFCI breaker on the boat? Perhaps the current sense circuit is failing or getting an inductive kickback from something... maybe a power controller or inverter?
Essentially you are killing power at the source both times, with the same result from the AC breaker.

- I always did that procedure. Was told it was not necessary
