I am rebedding the Goiot hatches on my WAUQUIEZ Hood 38 - got tired of the drips in heavy weather. Original bedding was silicone. Have already scraped and scrubbed the silicone residue off (some Zep citrus solvent cleaner actually worked fairly well). Now I'm planning to rebed them. My first instinct was to use 4200 with the Don Casey "let it harden to form a gasket, then tighten up on the fasteners" approach, but someone suggested that butyl strips were much better (and more easily replaced).
But I can't find any Internet advice specifically for this application - an overhead hatch with a flange. Some of the discussions about butyl suggest that there must be a groove or a countersink, or else all the butyl eventually just gets forced out.
Anyone out there have experience with using butyl to rebed an overhead hatch with a flat flange?
