I wish I had had it done years earlier. My experience was very good. I used a walker for 3 weeks, then a cane for 3 weeks then was on my own. Knowing I was leaving for a multi-year cruise that fall, I tackled the post surgery physical therapy aggressively and responded quite well to it. Following years of more or less constant pain prior to the surgery, my knee has been pain free ever since.
The only time there was any problem was once in American Samoa when I slipped on a wet sidewalk and during the fall hyper extended the knee a bit. I was terrified that I had done something bad to it, but that turned out not to be the case. I used a cane for a few days, but that was it.
I also did a two year cruise just a couple of years before the surgery and I'm here to tell you that working the foredeck was much easier with the new knee.
