He was on his way to the south Pacific, but didn't even make it out the Gate. No one knows what happened. He left Alameda at about slack tide and would have been riding the ebb out the gate. I'm guessing that this would have taken him maybe 3 hours, putting him at the Gate more or less at max ebb (about 2 kts ). His body was found on Angle Island, about 3 miles inland from where his boat was found on the rocks.
It's just a wild guess, but since his EPIRB didn't go off until 4:15am, I suspect he decided to stopped somewhere (perhaps Ayala Cove on Angle Island) to get some sleep, then left before dawn to ride the next ebb out. Somehow, he must have ended up in the water and was either able to swim to shore or washed up there, while his boat continued on towards the Gate where it hit the rocks at Yellow Bluff. There's no word yet on the cause of death.
