Don Street used to have his finger on those stats

because he was in the insurance business.
That's one of the reasons he advises so strongly against sailing south from New England via Bermuda in the fall except on a big boat . . .
Don says he stopped counting after 40 of his friends/acquaintances were lost on that route over the years.
Before EPIRBs and satcom, nobody knew you were missing until it was too late.
Without some kind of detailed analysis, I don't think we could possibly say whether more or fewer boats are getting into trouble . . . tho we do certainly hear about those that do.
I'd like to see a breakdown of the boats that get into trouble and why, and what kinds of boat get into what kind of trouble.
