the wings as you see implemented on a Catalina or Hunter certainly aren't doing anything for lift, drag, or efficiency. But there is a lot of volume there, and in a shallow draft fin you have to have enough volume to put even more lead. Wings were highly developed on the IACC class, but only due to the draft limitations and completely impractical in a cruising boat.
