Dip the end of the hose in hot water for about 30 seconds. Slide it onto the barb. Once you pull the hose out of the water you only have about ten seconds to get it on the barb.

Another alternative it to use a heat gun or hair drier. I prefer the hot water method myself - it is less likely to damage the hose. The hair drier approach is the way to get the hose off.
