I did a lot of re-coring of the balsa deck this winter thanks to a traveler mounted with no back filled epoxy holes in the balsa. I have two large coolers with seats on top that I use to take guests out during the summer. My thought was to back fill the four support holes with epoxy and through bolt them through the deck. Now I'm having second thoughts as I have a new ceiling below deck and even though the holes won't leak and ruin the balsa, they might eventually leak through the holes and drain between the deck and the new ceiling. (see attached photo of coolers). What I'm now thinking of doing today is simply using a stainless lag bolt that won't go all the way through the epoxy back fill and screw them into the epoxy. Do you think this would hold up? The boat doesn't heel a lot but we do get some real heavy guests and I don't want them leaning back and ripping out the bolts. What do you think? If I properly pre-drill for quarter inch lag bolts will they get nice and firm in epoxy?
