You could put drops of water on glass and see what kind of rings they leave

I think DM meant the highest range and I would try 1/4" apart. You need to get the reading as quick as possible as it will change as the probe are left in the water. The same amount of probe need to be in the water and the distance need to be the same to compare the waters.
