I actually have done that and the psychological aftertaste lasted for what seemed like days. Another method is to fill a clear glass half full of clean fresh water and hold it up to the light while dumping in a sample of the bilge water. If it is salt there will be a cloudy area formed where the fresh and salt meet. You can still follow up with an adult beverage which I highly recommend.
