The announcements this week that they'll support Android apps in the Windows 10 phones means that they'll finally have a viable app ecosystem. That might also mean that (unless they restrict it) you will be able to run Android apps on Windows 10 tablets and have a full PC (or tablet) that can run apps. That's pretty cool for the consumer.
What drove the iPhone into the mainstream was the app ecosystem, and what drove Android was the fact that it was free to OEMs and it became the OS of choice for "everybody else", while also carrying higher margins for cellphone providers, whose sales reps were paid to push it harder. The leading market share carried by Android also pulled app developers into creating versions of iOS apps for Android. But there just wasn't enough market share for app developers to do a 3rd version for Windows phones/tablets.
Even though it looks like "game over" -- this is still a fluid landscape and it will be interesting to see if Microsoft can pull it out in extra innings.
