() bike helmets normally do not have a hard shell... just soft foam, styrofoam, and a thin covering.
Skateboard helmets tend to have a hard shell and then the inner foam stuff.
Of course a sailing helmet will have the "marine label" on it. Gee, I wonder if bike helmets float?
