Some skateboard helmets are just like some "motorcycle" helmets -- they aren't really for protetion, just checking the box.

What you're trying to protect against (aside from falls) is the BOOM. So at least look for a helmet that i) will really protect against a blow; and ii) will work in the rain and spray -- i.e. won't mildew, get wet and heavy, etc.
