What's the difference between a drone and an RC model aircraft?

Is it just the fact you can drive it with a smart phone? And it has "self awareness" in that it knows where it is?
I'm all in favor of regulating these things. Imagine the uproar if people started operating RC or "drone" model cars on public roads.
