I sailed the Lake Ontario 300 this past weekend. The course is a figure 8 across the lake adding up to just over 300 nm, start just off Port Credit, ESE to Oswego NY, N to Main Duck Island, WSW to Niagara, N back to Port Credit. I drove to Toronto to meet the boat, pulling into the yard I came across the strangest rudder I've ever seen. Looks like someone was not happy with the performance of the original design. This was also one of the fattest keels I've ever seen so probably not great flow over the rudder.
At the other end of the performance spectrum was the open 60 "Oh Canada", ex Spirit of Canada, now being campaigned by Eric Holden with a run for the Vendée Globe.
Out on the start line, with about 95 boats registered, it looked a little crowded at first but the starts were well organized with only about 10~20 boats in each starting sequence.
We had some good sailing conditions, some not great but never too much wind. The workhorse sail was the asymmetrical spinnaker which we flew on each of the 4 legs. We had this view for about 80% of the race with very little upwind sailing.
We had lots of sunshine
We also had a lot of great food which makes for a happy crew.
