A few interesting things on my just finished trip.
Approaching Newport, there was a small racing catamaran that crossed in front of us.
They had a skiff trailing them, probably coaching. The catamaran passed behind our jib and came out the other side. The skiff went behind the jib, but didn't come out the other side. I peeked around the sail, and saw that the skiff stopped to pick up one of the two man crew who had fallen off. We then ducked under the overboard sailor and skiff. I was quite shaken up as if the skiff had not been there, I would not have known that there was a sailor in the water as the catamaran came out and appeared to be fine. Could have been a disaster.
Anchored in Nantucket, we heard an odd sound (9:10 AM). Got up and looked around and saw nothing awry. Got back into bed with my wife, and ten minutes later CRUNCH.
We had hit another boat. Asked my wife to bring in the anchor to pull us away from the other boat, and the rode was slack.
I pulled up the rode, and in 10 feet, the rode had been cut. The first sound must have been someone running over the rode and setting us adrift. Sent a diver down, but he couldn't find the anchor, so now I am out anchor, rode, payment to diver and damage to the other boat.
The sailing was otherwise good, and the company great (my wife).
Just picked up a new Rocna today at Defender. New rode will have more chain (first 130').
