Line and a rolling hitch, easy peasey, cheap and reliable.

Shock absorption is usually only required in storm conditions. The weight/catenary of the chain handles any shock loads in most anchoring. Used a rolling hitch on about 30' of line to take the strain off the windlass. Would drop the hook and set it, then tie the line on and let out a bit more chain till the snubber line took up the strain, easy peasy. Rolling hitch wasn't a problem undoing even after a 50 K blow and never accidentally fell off the chain like the chain hook that preceded it was prone to do. Worked 24/7 for a couple years of cruising.
