Another Varnish question ...

Galley countertops and Frig rebuild coming along. This our 1986 Tartan 40. Interior teak had been Watco oiled for years. Last several years I've been converting to Epi Gloss on the solid stock and Epi Rubbed Effect on the veneers, throughout below … this can be seen on the Frig panel/hatch door. I was meticulous removing the old Fiddles as I thought I'd re-use them. But, decided on milling up new Fiddles from teak. The old ones were a bit beat up, the fastener & bung holes won't work with the new tops, and with the time & expense of the new Corian tops, which look great, it'd be foolish not to go with new Fiddles. I'll spend more time working the old Fiddles than I will making new ones. The original (3) Face Frames fastened to the Cabinet outboard I will keep … clean up & varnish, as well as the original louver doors.

Varnishing the (7) new Fiddles and the existing Face Frames will be MUCH quicker and easier if done before install. Trying to figure out what would be best for the bungs ? I could get everything all cleaned up, sanded and installed, then 6-7 coats of varnish … but that'll take a ton of time and prep, if I install before any varnish. Or, I could lay on +/-5 coats, then install the Fiddles and the Face Frames, bung the countersinks, sharp chisel them off, sand / feather these in, then last couple coats of varnish over everything. Have also thought about a button bung, but don't like that idea. I'm trying to figure out the best way to blend in the bungs with the least amount of prep and work !

Suggestions ?

Thanks, cheers, John
