I've freed myself without going in the water.
In Response To: Yeah, or anchor. I think I had several options before a tow was needed. ()
I keel hauled a length of chain back to the stern, replaced the chain with a piece of line, winched the line in until the pot warp was out of the water, cut it, tied it to another float, and sailed off.
