Hmmm...
First thing I notice, your coolant is way over due for changing.
It's a mystery why that flap of bronze is over the hole,...
Not a normal setup...
One wild guess..

The Westerbeke Manual shows a conventional expansion tank for this engine, fellows
I'm with SG. Trying to chintz it along on time or money will give poor results....

So, is it a pressurized tank ?
I don' think so? It's just set-up to be mounted above the engine. Then the coolant drains down?
I don't get it ?
There are some engine systems (usually on some newer model land vehicles) which are pressurized
Ok, I get it now...
Hole needs to be fixed. A very good piece on this subject!
My Nissan diesel is similar, and the plastic cap on the expansion tank is a pressure cap.

Dan, it looks to me that your pics show connections that have been over pressurized and blown
Looking at the heat exchaner core...
