I totally understand your frustration and puzzlement.

As Doug noted, it's probably best to proceed with caution and not offer too much unless you can see a thirst for knowledge and ability to soak it in. I'd suggest a Power Squadrons safe boating course, as a good start. They teach basic boating safety, comprehensive chart reading and piloting skills for coastal navigation, and situational awareness.
