Re: I think the most prolific group of future globe girdlers, are the newbs.

Sometimes no matter what you say it won't do any good. I think it is perhaps a mental disorder in the delusional spectrum with some people.

I had a very good customer buy a Sourthern Cross that was a "kit boat". I tried to talk him out of it but he fell in-love... I spent two years working with him on that boat, as his budget allowed, and it was still a LONG way from being seaworthy when he finally gave up and sold it. I then got a call from the new owner who needed some stuff fixed "right away". I met him on a Saturday and he gave me a punch list of non-essential items and told me; "Get cracking I need to leave by tomorrow."

ME: "Where are you heading?"

HIM: "First stop is Virginia."

I stepped back, looked him in the eye and said;

ME: "Well then I am fixing the wrong stuff for a trip like that."

HIM: "What do you mean?"

ME: "This boat has no place being outside of Casco Bay until X, X, X, X, X, X, X, & X are done, at a bare minimum. This vessel is NOT READY, NOR SAFE FOR THE OPEN OCEAN YET."

He just shrugged, mumbled something about it being a solid blue water design and told me to keep fixing the stereo...

About a month later I get an email from Rob, the original owner, with a link to an article about the new owner being rescued by helicopter and how he lost the boat. Rob had told him flat out that the boat should be trucked South, I had also told him adamantly NOT to take her off shore yet he simply ignored it. Go figure that he got into trouble, lost the boat, and required a USCG helicopter rescue.... In talking with him he also seemed grossly unaware of what sailing actually is. Stupid is, as stupid does.....
