Much like abandoned dogs and cats, I am a sucker for boat rescues. You are absolutely correct that a boat of this design has nothing to do with the sailing we do now. In fact, it probably sails like the IP except with bigger full keel bad habits? Never the less, it has nice lines, lots of wood to varnish and would probably take at least three years to refit.
Hard to explain I guess, several of the guys at the club told me last Friday that deep down I just like working on boats. Once they are done it's time for a new rescue. At some point this needs to stop because I'm getting tool old to take on such projects, plus take care of the house and the cabin. It is pretty unlikely that the Rafiki will be ours but it's still fun to prowl the yards and look.
I heard rumor of a 40' steel boat that is in storage at the Port Authority. Raven was built by a local marine mechanic as his personal boat, was eventually sold to his partner who sailed it for five years, then put it in storage.
