main sheet rigging opinions please

When the PO of our Hunter ordered the boat, he requested that it not have a main sheet traveler. The mainsheet is a triple sheave Harken block setup where one block attaches to the boom and the other (triple sheave block with a cam cleat) attaches to a stout pad eye on the cockpit sole just forward of the steering pedestal. It works fairly well, frees up a bunch of cockpit space but does have one issue. The sheet itself is difficult to un-cleat. The cam cleat is located on the underside of the block and has only a few inches clearance from the cockpit sole. (sorry I don't have a good photo of the setup). The best way I found to release it was to step on the rope which usually takes a few tries to pull down out of the cam cleat.

I was thinking of adding a length of SS wire rope with a thimble on each end as a pendant between the lower block shackle and the pad eye. Just long enough to get that block up off the deck so you could pull the main sheet down out of the cam cleat with your hand instead of stepping on the sheet with your foot? I can't think of any reason why this wouldn't work, thoughts?
