In this day and age, the only real reason for a traveler is to pull the boom up to weather a bit. The rigid vangs have a lot of power, and are fully capable of keeping tension on the leech with the sheet cracked off a bit. I'd suggest the option of leading the mainsheet fwd along the boom, down to the deck, then back to a cabintop winch - get rid of the pesky cam cleat.
